Nigerian man evades death sentence, get life for meth possession

An Indonesian court on Monday handed down a life sentence to a Nigerian man for possession of methamphetamine and marijuana worth an estimated Rp 6 billion ($451,400), The Jakarta Globe reported.
Depok District Court judge Hariyanto said in his ruling that Uzoma Alpha, 33, was found guilty for owning grade 1 narcotic drugs and sentenced to life imprisonment...

The prosecutors earlier sought the death penalty.

Chief prosecutor Eddy Abdul Aziz said his team would consider mounting an appeal to obtain the death sentence.

The Nigetian man was arrested at his apartment at the Margonda Residence tower in Depok last December during a raid by authorities from the immigration office.

Police found in a search of his apartment seven kilogrammes of meth and 300 grammes of marijuana.

Indonesia’s justice system takes a notoriously hard line on foreign drug offenders. The country drew global condemnation earlier this year for a series of executions of drug convicts in which 12 foreign nationals and two Indonesians were gunned down by firing squad.
