Dozens hold anti-gay protests in Kenya

Anti-gay protests have been held in Kenya's capital, Nairobi a day after Deputy President William Ruto said homosexuals had no place in the country.

The demonstration was aimed at US President Barack Obama, who protesters fear will put pressure on Kenya's government to adopt laws allowing same sex marriages in his trip later in July...

A lawmaker said Obama should not push a pro-gay agenda when he visits the country later this month.

"We are telling Mr Obama when he comes to Kenya this month and he tries to bring the abortion agenda, the gay agenda, we shall tell him to shut up and go home," lawmaker Irungu Kangata told the demonstrators outside parliament.
The American president is scheduled to visit Kenya for the Global Leadership Summit later in the month and there is speculation he will call on the East African nation to embrace gay rights.

While terming same sex unions as an abomination, the protesters said they were willing to resist attempts to legalize gay marriages in Kenya.
Many of the Nairobi demonstrators wore t-shirts with the slogans "Protect the family match" and "Stand with the family".

On Sunday, Deputy President William Ruto had led the condemnation and warned that gays had no place in Kenya.

Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya and has been so since colonial British rule, which ended in 1963.
